History & Charity Work |
We have an active social club that arranges charity events throughout the year. Recent events have included Mr & Mrs, Deal or No Deal and a Race Night. The Charity functions receive great support from our club members. The charities we have supported over the past few years have been MacMillan, Children's Hospice South West and our nomination for 2010 is Help for Heroes |
The club was founded in 1971 when 200 people of Little Stoke signed up for membership. A loan was taken from Bass for £28000 to buy the land and build the club The Club opened in May 1972. In 1975 it was expanded to its present size when a double skittle alley/function room was added The 70's & 80's were very busy with thousands being raised for charity via the famous "Bed Push" Unfortunately a lack of investment in the building saw it decay over the 90's In 2000 the club re-financed itself with a loan from a bank and became a "free house" selling products from more than one supplier. Several major projects were undertaken over the past few years with complete renovation of the building. A new roof, toilets, bar refit, outside decking area, lounge refurbishment and a new skittle alley being laid. In Nov 2011 the club will move into a more fluid state having paid off the current mortgage, a huge testament to achieving this mile stone has been the tireless work shown by our committee and ultimately the support given from our customers to offer all a great place for social relaxation and providing the local community a friendly retreat for many years to come. Thanks to all - Tim Hewer Chairman LSSC |
